Nelson Mandela once said, \u201cIf you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is undoubtedly true. For this reason and many more, we, as a parent, would love our children to speak as many languages as possible. Therefore we plan to teach our mother tongue first and continue adding other languages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teaching children your mother tongue is easy;  when you live in a country where most people speak the same language as your mother tongue. Because you’re not the only teacher to your child, but the whole people around are.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The challenge comes when you live in a foreign country. Teaching your language to your children requires a lot of commitment because their exposure is minimal.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As any Ethiopian parents living in the US, teaching our children Amharic is one of our challenges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore one of the things we do to help us teach Amharic to our children is to have as many Amharic books as possible. There aren\u2019t a lot of choices available here, and that makes it even more challenging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
