Nelson Mandela once said, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
This is undoubtedly true. For this reason and many more, we, as a parent, would love our children to speak as many languages as possible. Therefore we plan to teach our mother tongue first and continue adding other languages.
Teaching children your mother tongue is easy; when you live in a country where most people speak the same language as your mother tongue. Because you’re not the only teacher to your child, but the whole people around are.
The challenge comes when you live in a foreign country. Teaching your language to your children requires a lot of commitment because their exposure is minimal.
As any Ethiopian parents living in the US, teaching our children Amharic is one of our challenges.
Therefore one of the things we do to help us teach Amharic to our children is to have as many Amharic books as possible. There aren’t a lot of choices available here, and that makes it even more challenging.
From some of the Amharic books we found, Fidel’s Amharic & English bilingual sound book is the best resource available.
