I’ve never considered myself a hair care enthusiast. Honestly, I could be labeled as a bit lazy when it comes to tending to my hair despite my generally hardworking nature in other areas.
For the longest time, I kept my hair short, especially considering I have 4c hair that demands a fair amount of care – something I admittedly neglected.
Then came motherhood, and my hair took a hit with postpartum hair loss after the first pregnancy, 4 years ago. Even though it had been thriving and glossy during those nine months.
I decided to give it a big chop, much to my husband’s shock. He urged me to care for my hair and let it grow. And although I wanted to make him happy, my lazy hair care routine persisted.
With my second pregnancy, my hair grew beautifully again, but my lack of proper care led to postpartum shedding. I got a trim this time, avoiding the drastic chop of the first round.
During my third pregnancy, my hair growth reached new heights. I began experimenting with treatments like moisturizing with mixed oils and trying out protective styles.
Determined to care for my hair postpartum this time, I’ve experienced minimal hair loss, surprising even myself.
Three-plus months after welcoming my third child, I straightened my hair for a special occasion, and the growth was phenomenal.
Compliments flooded throughout the day. Some people even doubting it was my natural hair, prompting them to touch it to confirm it wasn’t an extension. 😆
So, as many have asked about the secret to my hair growth, I’ve decided to spill the beans on everything I did that I believe contributed to my hair journey. Here are seven tips that I hope will help you too!
- Balanced diet
- Prenatal vitamins
- Castor oil
- My DIY hair oil
- Natural hair product
- Shower head water filter
- Do nothing to my hair, no heat, but a protective style
Balanced Diet for Hair Growth
Even though I don’t eat specifically for my hair, ensuring a balanced diet, I believe, has been a game-changer for my hair growth journey.
A nutrient-rich diet with a mix of vitamins and minerals contributes to the overall health of your hair.
Incorporating a variety of fruits, vegetables, proteins, and healthy fats has not only fueled my body but has visibly enhanced the strength and vitality of my hair.
Prenatal Vitamins for Healthy Hair
Starting before my first pregnancy and continuing through subsequent pregnancies and postpartum phases, these prenatal vitamins with folate have been a constant for the last four-plus years.
Not only did my midwife recommend them for breastfeeding, but they have become a staple in maintaining the health of my hair.
The consistency in brand and quality has played a crucial role in supporting my hair growth.
Castor Oil for Postpartum Hair Loss
Even though there is no clinical evidence to prove castor oil benefit to prevent shedding, it has been a true hero in my hair care routine. I apply it before washing, generously moisturizing my scalp and hairline—areas prone to breakage.
Then I leave it on for an hour or more before washing it with natural hair products (linked below) has significantly reduced hair shedding and promoted healthier growth. I am using this organic castor oil.
DIY Hair Oil to Prevent Postpartum Hair Loss
For a personalized touch, I’ve crafted my DIY hair oil by blending various oils. Such as almond, jojoba, olive, and rosehip oils. Adding a few drops of rosemary essential oil provides extra nourishment.
This mixture serves as a post-wash moisturizer, leaving my hair deeply hydrated and protected.
Natural Hair Products to Minimize Postpartum Hair Loss
After experimenting with several natural hair products, I’ve found my match with Mielle Organic. Their pomegranate and honey shampoos, and Leave-in Conditioner have become my go-to essentials.
The thick hair masque treatment they offer is a lifesaver for postpartum hair loss, preventing breakage. Additionally, their mousse is my preferred choice for styling.
Shower Head Water Filter
Understanding the impact of chlorine stripping hair moisture and the contaminants present in tap water, I’ve incorporated an affordable showerhead water filter into my routine.
This not only safeguards my hair but contributes to overall health by reducing exposure to harmful elements.
No Heat, Protective Styles
Maintaining the health of my hair involves minimal heat usage – no hair dryer unless for special occasions. Instead, I opt for protective hairstyles like twists and braids.
To safeguard my hair while sleeping, I use a silky protective wrap coupled with a microfiber hair towel that minimizes breakage and frizz.
I hope these tips become valuable additions to your hair care routine, especially in navigating the challenges of postpartum hair loss. May your hair journey be filled with health, resilience, and vibrant growth!
